A tough coastal tree/shrub, the Ake Ake is great for harsh conditions growing to around 10m. One of the highest density of NZ timbers. Historically used as walking staves, clubs and weapons. The fruit pulp has been known to make soap.

Common Name: Ake Ake

Scientific Name: Dodonaea viscosa

Height at Maturity: About 7-10 meters with a spready crown and 30cm trunk.

Time To Maturity: 8 year+

Habitat: Dry or wet or depleted soils. Enjoys sandy coastal environments. Not recommended for inland conditions. Usually North Island and upper South Island

Domesticated Uses: Responds well to trimming and so can make a good hedge or just let it grow naturally.

Flowering: August to November

Fruiting: November to April
